The Murray Group

Story: After the events with the Transylvanian Count Dracula, Mina divorced Jonathan Harker taking her maiden name again. Years later, in may 1898, Campion Bond approached Mina Murray. She was to gather a group of men to serve England. The men were Captain Nemo, Allan Quatermain, Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde and Hawley Griffin, the Invisible Man [1,2]. The group, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, was the third team gathered by England to carry that name [6]. Later the group was also known as the first Murray Group [11].

The job was retrieving a stolen rocket fuel called cavorite, which should be used for a lunar expedition to mark the dawn of the 20th century [2]. The cavorite was retrieved from Fu Manchu (not named in the book) and given to Campion Bond and his superior "M" [3].

In reality "M" was the nefarious Professor Moriarty who was fighting Fu Manchu for control over London's criminal underworld [4]. Mina and her league stopped the professor and was hired permanently to serve England by Mycroft Holmes who became head of intelligence [5].

When the Martians attacked Earth, the league was once again called upon [7]. The mission proved to be fatal for the league. Griffin betrayed the humans [7] leading to Hyde killing him [9]. Mina and Allan Quatermain became lovers on a mission to obtain a weapon from Dr. Moreau [8]. The weapon turned out to be an anthrax/streptococcus hybrid, which killed the Martians and all the humans in the vicinity. In order to use the weapon, Hyde distracted the Martians as long as he could and was killed in the process. The weapon worked, and the Martians were defeated [10].

Shocked by the experience, including the deaths of Griffin and Hyde, Mina went away from Quatermain for a while [10], but the following year England needed her again and she and Quatermain continued their adventures, occasionally helped by their former team mate Captain Nemo [11].

On a mission to find the Fountain of Youth in Africa, Allan and Mina found the Fountain in 1901. Instead of reporting the find, Quartermain used it to become young again. The official story was that the Fountain was a hoax and Allan Quartermain had died on the failed mission. As a stroke of luck however, Mina had found his son Allan Quartermain Jr. Mina started using what they found at the fountain later, as she looked like she was in her 20s in 1958 [11].

Continuing as his son, Quartermain along with Mina traveled the World for the British Empire. In 1906 they met the immortal Orlando in Tibet, and in 1907 they found the Blazing World, a magical 4D world between the British Isles and the Arctic territories [11].

Only little is known about what Murray and Quartermain did until 1958. They were rumored to have gathered a new Murray Group and fought the minions of Cthulhu and Yuggoth in the 1920s, and during WWII they were on some mission for the Empire before vanishing to the Blazing World in 1944 [11].

In 1958 Murray and Quartermain resurfaced. The British Intelligence had collected a dossier about the Murray Group and its members, and Murray and Quartermain went to London to take the dossier. After stealing the dossier from Military Intelligence HQ the two went back to the Blazing World [11].

Background notes: Mina Murray or Mina Harker is the character from Bram Stoker's Dracula. In Stoker's book, she and her husband Jonathan stayed married getting a son named Quincey, whereas in Alan Moore's version she divorced Jonathan and went her own way.

When The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LXG) was released as a movie in 2003, Mina Murray was a part of the league, played by Peta Wilson. In the movie she was a vampire contrary to the comic and original novel.
