Country of origin: USA ![]() Background notes: When Silo was first introduced in the third strip of Sam's Strip in 1961, he was just an unnamed character that had a conversation with Sam. He looked a lot like he does today, but his looks with the long tie, checkered trousers and derby hat did not appear until around strip #90. The name Silo did not appear until the series was resurrected as Sam & Silo in 1977. Sam's Strip was just that: Sam's. Silo was just another recurring character commenting on what Sam and the other characters did. It stayed this way until the series folded after 504 strips on June 1st, 1963. It wasn't until the series was resurrected as Sam & Silo on April 18, 1977, that Sam and Silo became equal partners. Along with getting a name, Silo was also changed from being a slightly henpecked married man to being a bachelor like Sam. The series was very different from the highly acclaimed Sam's Strip and has been criticized for the change. The series was done by Mort Walker and Jerry Dumas until 1995, when Mort Walker left the series. After this, it was continued by Dumas, and is still being produced today. Examples: ![]() ![]() ![]() |
