Story: Very little has been revealed about Igor Karkaroff's past. He was one of Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters, and after the defeat of Voldemort he spent some time at Azkaban. He was released from Azkaban after he cut a deal with the Ministry of Magic and gave up the names of the other Death Eaters. At some point after this, he became the headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute [1].Igor Karkaroff came to Hogwarts during the 1994-1995 school year for the Triwizard Tournament. While he was there, his Dark Mark started to become darker, as Voldemort's strength grew. When Voldemort finally got enough power to come back to life on June 24, 1995, the night of the third Triwizard Task, Karkaroff fled, as he knew that Voldemort and the Death Eaters wanted revenge for his betrayal [1].
Where Karkaroff escaped to has not been revealed other than he was found "in a shack up north" by members of the Death Eaters. He managed to stay alive for a year before the Death Eaters killed him [2].
