Story: In 1950, the Brotherhood's scientists took a fertilized egg from a sacrifice and implanted into a surrogate womb. The dragon spirit had left the dead woman, but a residual was left in the child. The child, Layil's mother, was Desirée Hopewell's half-sister. Layil's mother should have had the control of the Brotherhood, but Desirée unintentionally caused her death instead. Layil took over instead, putting the pieces of the dragon spirit together [2].
Instead of the dragon spirit being split out on several people, Layil wanted it all for herself. In order to get the part of the dragon spirit owned by Desirée Hopewell, she went to Africa to learn the juju of the dragon spirit [1]. Having absorbed the knowledge of how to get Desirée's part of the dragon spirit, she caught Desirée and sacrificed her according to the plan. Things didn't work out entirely as planned. Just as Layil plunged the knife in Desirée's chest, Desirée absorbed Layil's powers and the full dragon spirit, killing Layil in the process [2].
